The Clean Energy Challenge is a business plan competition which will award $130,000 in cash prizes to top Illinois clean tech entrepreneurs. The finalists will compete on March 3 in two categories, an Early Stage Business track and a Seed Stage track. Over 72 applicants were submitted by the December 20th deadline. A team of over 30 independent evaluators have reviewed, scored and selected 10 companies and 5 concepts to move to the next stage.

An incredible innovation story has been unfolding in genetic sequencing, which is giving rise to one of today’s grand challenges of computing. New DNA sequencing tools in development are said to have enough horsepower to decipher the complete 3-billion-letter signature of an individual’s DNA for under $1,000, and possibly with as little as 15 minutes of work. If this can be done on a large scale, scientists hope it will create an enormously deep set of information to clear the way for a more personalized brand of medicine.
