Transforming the Chemical Industry

Genomatica is a technology leader for the chemical industry. The company delivers new, transformative manufacturing processes that enable its partners to produce intermediate and basic chemicals from renewable feedstocks. These chemicals serve as the basis for making substantially all of the products that make modern life possible, and the processes enable the production of the exact same intermediate and basic chemicals that are at the core of the chemical industry. Genomatica expects its processes will deliver better economics with enhanced sustainability and a smaller environmental footprint than conventional petroleum-based manufacturing processes.

Genomatica’s proprietary biotechnology platform allows it to create fermentation-based manufacturing processes and to engineer the enabling microorganisms that drive the efficient conversion of renewable feedstocks into chemicals. The company is developing a pipeline of manufacturing processes for the production of these chemicals, including its first target chemical, butanediol, or BDO, and its second target chemical, butadiene. In 2011, Genomatica’s technology was recognized with the U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

Genomatica is working to partner with industry leaders to accelerate broad and rapid commercial utilization of its production processes. To date, the company has announced arrangements with Tate & Lyle, Mitsubishi Chemical, Novamont, Gruppo M&G and Waste Management.

Genomatica has been producing BDO at demonstration scale since June 2011 at the plant of its partner, Tate & Lyle. The company expects the first commercial-scale BDO plant that utilizes its processes to begin high-volume production by the end of 2012, at a plant owned and operated by one of its industry partners, Novamont.
